WHY DO WE NEED MARS?

Currently in the US, more people die from opioid overdose than from gun violence or car crashes. To make the situation more challenging, detox and inpatient treatment are not always accessible to opiate addicts seeking help. However, due to current government funding increases, Medication Assisted Treatment, or MAT, is now available to many, sometimes at no cost. In combination with peer support, this is a viable recovery pathway for many. Not only can MAT prevent overdose fatalities, but it can also provide a strong foundation for a healthy, productive life. Despite the above, many individuals on MAT face obstacles getting the support they need. There is currently an overwhelming stigma surrounding MAT, coming from many sources, including the recovery community itself. The overriding message of stigma seems to be “You’re not clean. You’re not in recovery.” Due to this stigma, MAT patients are in desperate need of qualified, trained, nonjudgmental support.
